MEET LOREN LOCKMAN Raised in a typical American middle class neighborhood, I grew up eating a more or less Standard American Diet. Mine was a little better, perhaps, as my mother had decided early on that excessive sugar intake must be harmful, and so refused to buy most processed cereals, cookies, and other confections. Instead of these and most other overly-sweetened foods, we were offered fruit for dessert and snacks most of the time. Additionally, though we ate animal products and processed foods at almost every meal, a tight budget informed my mother’s choice to provide fresh vegetables, grains, salads, and fruits as the largest part of our diet. Though I didn’t know it at the time, these variations from the typical American diet no doubt served me well, and laid the foundation for a better diet later in life. Thanks Mom! By the time I was in high school, I had rebelled against the sugar prohibition in a big way, feeding myself tons of junk food to make up for all those “lean” years. Thankfully, this period only lasted a couple of years and ended when I became interested in nutrition as a senior in high school. Though my early understanding of the subject was completely based on accepted nutritional dogma, I did begin make improvement, if only by degrees. It was several years later when the impetus for real change occurred; I had just graduated from college and was living in Washington, DC. Within a few months, I started to get very ill. I was exhausted all the time, and my digestive system seemed to have stopped working; I constantly fluctuated between diarrhea and constipation and was virtually always uncomfortable, no matter what I ate. I also suffered from all kinds of respiratory distress. Naturally, I went to my doctor to get healed. After a complete examination, I was told that I had a sinus infection, and probably needed to be more careful about what I ate, but was otherwise fine. I was given a course of a broad-spectrum antibiotic, which I took as prescribed. Though they didn’t help with my digestive problems, my sinuses improved, and I started to feel a little better. For a while. Before long though, my sinus problems were back, worse than ever. My digestive system, which had never improved, continued to plague me. And I was still exhausted all the time. Other than that, I was fine. So I went back to my doctor. I was very disappointed when after another complete examination, the doctor informed me that though the sinus infection was back, I was okay otherwise. He assured me that there was nothing wrong with me. “That’s funny”, I thought. “My body used to work.” Not any more. And it was supposed to all be in my head. I sought out another doctor, who suggested some allergy testing and diagnosed me with allergies to nearly 60 different substances, including most fruit and vegetables, dust, pollen, mold, and it seemed, practically everything else. I had never been allergic to anything before, and didn’t understand this. My doctor assured me that it was not unusual, and that I only needed to get weekly allergy shots for the nearly 60 offending substances. I envisioned my arm, (or butt) looking like swiss cheese after all the shots, and decided to pass. Like the first doctor, this one too, assured me that the rest of the symptoms were all in my head. That seemed odd, as I was almost positive they were coming from the entirely opposite end. I took more antibiotics, and continued to suffer -- and drag myself through -- every day. One more doctor provided me with similarly unsatisfactory diagnoses and results. Finally, after 2.5 years, three doctors, several courses of antibiotics, and numerous insults to my intelligence, I was diagnosed with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, Irritable Bowel Syndrome, Chronic Sinusitis, Candidiasis, and the aforementioned allergies. I realized that I wasn’t likely to get any help from medicine, and finally gave up on it to seek my own answers. I started by going back to nutrition and quickly realized that I was already doing everything conventional theory said I should. And I was very sick in spite of it. In retrospect, I was more likely very sick because of it. Once I realized the many fallacies inherent in a nutritional system based on studying average members of our culture – walking disease factories – I discarded conventional nutrition and turned instead to nature, intuitively understanding the perfection there. Seeking to make my diet as “natural” as possible, I gave up all processed foods and animal products, realizing the “unnaturalness” of the former and the complete inability of our bodies to profitably use the latter. Within six months, all of my conditions had resolved (“spontaneously” and “miraculously” in medical lingo). Feeling better than I had in several years, I might have easily walked away satisfied at my new level of health. And though I was glad to feel as I did, I also realized that there was even more available – more vitality, more energy, more mental clarity. I kept looking for ways to improve my diet and other lifestyle choices. Several years later, in late 1991, I was at a conference in Washington, DC and heard someone mention “raw food”. I immediately realized that this was, of course, a major missing piece. In retrospect, it seems rather silly that it never occurred to me before that eating cooked food wasn’t natural. I went raw nearly overnight, eating a cooked vegan Thanksgiving meal as my last pre-raw meal. The difference this step made to my health was amazing, and I’ve never looked back. I have, on several occasions since 1991, eaten cooked food, sometimes for emotional reasons, sometimes because I thought my body would now be able to handle it. In fact, as my system has gotten cleaner and cleaner and continues to function better, it increasingly handles any straying from the path as a clean body always does – with a powerful and nearly immediate reaction designed to eliminate the offending substance from the body. In the years since going raw, I have continued to refine my diet with improvements to my health and vitality following each refinement. Like many people, I started eating raw food with many prepared dishes, often designed to mimic the look, feel and taste of cooked food dishes. Though the desire to do this is understandable, and the value of these more complex dishes is very real if they help one continue eating only raw food, it’s important to understand that they are always compromises, and in some cases, rather major compromises. Simpler really is better, and as my diet got simpler, my health, vitality, and mental clarity continued to improve all the time. Today, I eat much less food than is supposed to be possible, and feel much better for it. Averaging 1000 calories/day, I eat mostly fruit, small amounts of greens, and very few nuts and seeds (always soaked first). Running a fasting retreat, traveling and presenting lectures and seminars on health, and doing many one-on-one consultations over the years, I have had the opportunity to see over and over again just how powerful the difference between an optimal raw diet, and one that is less optimal. Getting the body as clean as possible through fasting, then maintaining that cleanliness and optimal functioning by optimizing the diet and other lifestyle choices is the key to creating the most amazing levels of health imaginable. Regardless of your present situation, you can enjoy better health than you’ve probably thought possible, though this level of achievement requires an equal level of commitment to making choices that truly support you in every way. You can create whatever you want, and though it may seem like you have to give up a lot – maybe too much – in order to achieve perfect health, there is no substitute for feeling great all the time, and it never feels like a sacrifice once you begin to achieve an unbelievably high level of vitality.
